Soil does not only serve as a foundation for plants to grow, but it also plays an essential part in sustaining their life. If anything, your plants’ lives depend on soil, which is why, before we start seeding, it is essential to prepare and cultivate the soil first. There are several ways to supply nutrients for your garden plants, but the primary ingredients to achieve healthy horticulture are through organic materials – fertiliser and cypress mulch.

Organic Compost

Organic composts are collected from compost pits that have an appropriate mixture and growth of brown and green elements. It is usually composed of decayed natural materials such as fruit and vegetable peelings, shredded leaves, livestock manure, etc. You can choose from the two methods called hot and cold composting.

  • Hot composting is when you supply generous amounts of nitrogen-based materials like green matters (fresh leaves, grass clippings, poultry manure, etc.) to produce air in the soil, creating moisture while heating the ground.
  • Cold composting requires little maintenance, but the catch is that it takes a year to cultivate. Unless you have the patience to wait, then try cold compost.

Organic compost, when mixed with the soil in your garden, can act as fertilisers that promote the proliferation of good bacteria that assists the healthy growth of plants. It enriches the land and prevents pest infestations, and the fruit-bearing and edible plants are much safer to consume compared to plants grown from chemical fertilisers.

Mulching

Mulching provides cover and protection of garden soil from harsh weather and pest infiltration and prevents soil erosion. This method is also applied to retain moisture in the soil, which can help cool down the plant during the summer season. The best mulch to use is made from Cypress barks. Shredded Cypress barks are ideal because it is an exceptional weed barrier, has a mild aroma compared to other wood barks when rotting, is sturdy, and doesn’t easily decompose.

Step-by-step gardening guides are available to search online, but always keep in mind, that no matter how accurate the process may be, the best way for a blooming garden is to feed the soil with organic components, and to allot time to care for it.
