Many gardeners love cypress mulch for several reasons, the main one being that it is organic and inexpensive. When laid flat in a thick mat on soil, it keeps weeds from growing or unwanted seeds or plants from tunnelling down into the soil. When used in outdoor gardens, it stays in place through wind and rain. So, can it be used for indoor potted plants and gardens? The answer is, yes. It not only adds nutrients to the soil but also lasts several seasons before it starts to decompose completely. It also doesn’t change the soil’s pH levels.
Using Cypress Mulch
Cypress mulch is a term referring to mulch made from shredded pond cypress trees or bald cypress trees. The mulch is either ground into chips or shredded.
Cypress mulch is generally inexpensive compared to other organic mulches. As it slowly decomposes, it adds nutrients to the soil. It is also effective in preventing weed growth. So, whether you’re just growing potted or hanging plants indoors, or you have a small indoor vegetable garden, cypress mulch can be placed as matting in the soil.
Aside from being a weed suppressant, cypress mulch retains water, so the soil and plant roots don’t dry up quickly. As the mulch retains a high amount of water, the mulch becomes soaked, and so the water slowly seeps to the plant roots. Even when used indoors the cypress mulch helps in reducing evaporation from the soil since a home’s heating system can cause water to evaporate from the soil, especially during the winter months when the heating is going full tilt.
Cypress mulch, like other mulches, tends to pull some nitrogen from the soil. The nitrogen becomes stored in the mulch as it slowly decomposes. For most plants, this may be negligible. However, if your vegetable plants or other plants begin to have yellowing leaves, this may be due to nitrogen deficiency. This is easily fixed by applying nitrogen-based fertilizer.
