Healthy soil means a healthy garden. You don’t need to apply miracle chemicals or new-fangled fertilisers just to make your garden soil healthy. Adding organic compost to your garden soil is the best and least expensive thing you can do to produce beautiful garden flowers or a nice crop of vegetables.
For colder climates
Adding organic compost to your soil depends on your geographical location. If you live in cooler climates such as South Australia, New South Wales, and Victoria, where there is only one major growing season, from late spring to early fall. Layer partially decomposed organic compost during the stated period, before the ground freezes and let it decompose through the winter. In the next spring, your soil will be ready for planting.
For warmer climates
For those in Queensland or Northern Territory where a warm climate offers almost year-round gardening, you need to add compost twice a year to accommodate two growing seasons. One warm and one cool. This also means you can cycle different flowers, vegetables, and herbs that thrive in each season.
Determine how rich your soil is
If you’re just a beginner, first determine if the soil in your garden beds is organically rich. This doesn’t have to be matter and molecular physics. You can simply use the “eyeball test.” Light coloured soil doesn’t contain as much organic matter. Dark brown and black soil is already rich in organic matter.
Soil with limited organic matter
If the soil is light and not organically rich, add four to six inches of organic compost before each planting season, or as stated above.
Soil already rich in organic matter
For this type of soil, just add one to two inches of fresh organic compost before each season, or as stated above.
The root systems of most annual vegetables and annual flowers remain within the top twelve inches of soil. Loosening up your soil to this depth will help the roots penetrate freely to find nutrients and moisture.
