Placing mulch around your rose garden protects the flowers from weeds and keeps the soil moist all the time since dry soil is not good for roses. Select mulch carefully as the wrong type of mulch in your rose garden may deplete the nutrients in the soil.

Good mulch such as cypress mulch can promote good growth and this mulch breaks down over time to become compost, which further enriches the soil.

Mulch layers

Placing a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch around roses will keep the soil moist and prevent weeds from proliferating.

One of the best mulch layering is to have that 2- or 3-inch layer with organic compost at the middle or at the bottom of the mulch. The compost enriches the soil by releasing nitrogen and quickens the breakdown of mulch into compost as well. After a season or two and you observe that the mulch has broken down into compost, you can add another thin layer of mulch on top.

Pine bark, tea tree, bush, and cypress mulch

Using native pine bark, tea tree, bush, and cypress mulch on top of organic compost greatly helps in keeping your roses healthy by preventing diseases that can kill the plants. Placing the mulch as a layer on top of the organic compost layer prevents the leaching of nitrogen from the soil as the compost and mulch breaks down into the soil.

Just be careful with pine bark and tea tree mulch in areas of heavy rain as the chips might float away or attract termites.  Always be vigilant with the latter.

Mulching with leaves and other waste options

Shredded leaves, grass clippings, or even pine needles make for good mulch options in a rose garden. However, do not use these wastes if they have been treated with herbicides or have been exposed to plant diseases. Like the other mulch, put a top layer on the compost layer. Grass clippings need to be dried out first before mulching as they might contain weed seeds.

If your soil has a high pH level, waste mulch can lower it. This is especially beneficial in areas with this problem and needs acidification to lower the pH level of the soil to 6.2 – 6.8pH as preferred by roses.

It is preferable not to use cocoa mulch as they are not suitable for roses. Also, if you have cat or dog pets, these can be toxic to them.
