For your cypress mulch needs, you need not look further than Labrador Landscape Supplies.

Cypress mulch comes from, obviously, cypress trees. But people often make the mistake of referring to all kinds of conifers as cypress. You see, the cypress belongs only to the genus Cupressus, and this is considered the true cypress tree. Other genera like the Taxodium or Glyptostrobus, though loosely called swamp cypresses, are not true cypress trees.

Cypress history

Although most popular cypress trees are known in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, many cypress trees also grow in the Mediterranean, North Africa, and in countries around the Persian Gulf. Ancient Egyptians used cypress wood as mummy cases because of their durability. Ancient Greeks used cypress wood to create urns to store the ashes of those who died in battle.

Cypress trees produce some of the world’s prized wood because it is lightweight and durable as a building material. The wood doesn’t bleed or generate dap. This means the wood takes well to sealers and paint.

Popular uses for cypress wood include:

  • Chests and boxes
  • Tables
  • Cabinets
  • Boats
  • Home roofing shingles/sidings/porches
  • Barns
  • Firewood
  • Mulch

Cypress mulch

Cypress mulch is made from cypress tree wood. The wood is hacked and chopped up into little pieces that can be spread around a garden, plants, or other trees.

The best cypress mulch comes from wood taken from cypress trees with knees. Cypress trees are the only trees with knees. These are woody growths that sprout around the trees at a distance of several feet and occur where cypress trees are growing in swampy conditions. This knee growth supplements the oxygen supplies to submerged root systems.

What makes the cypress wood from knee growths special is probably because of the absorption of a lot of nutrients from the swampy land. When the wood is made into mulch, the nutrients seep out from the wood and are absorbed into the soil, making cypress mulch beneficial for gardens of all varieties.
