If you want to buy sands Australia for your garden bricklaying project, see us at Labrador Landscape Supplies.

You don’t need to be an expert cement mixer or bricklayer for gardening projects. Learn the basics and how to use tools and materials for bricklaying. You don’t even need to be a pro. Just make sure there’s a landscape supply store near you where you can buy sands Australia and other materials, and perhaps tools, and you’re good to go while learning the basics.

What you need

To start, you need to get these basic tools:

  • Brick trowel.
  • Spirit level.
  • Jointing bar.
  • Tape measure.
  • Rubber mallet.
  • Safety glasses.
  • Gloves.
  • Lines and pins.
  • Soft-bristled brush.

Note: Before doing any bricklaying, first check what the weather will be like for the whole week. This is because you can’t lay bricks in the rain or cold weather. Rain or cold weather will make your mortar run down and destroy the structure you built.

Preparation and mixing

You need water from a hose to wet down the cement and sand to make concrete; you can also use a bucket of water. When mixing concrete, make sure to add the water to the cement and sand mixture slowly. After that, add the water gradually so that your cement will have good consistency. It should be wet enough to be thick, but not too wet that the cement may run off. If there is too much water, you won’t be able to use the mortar. But, if there is too little water, it will be hard to apply and will crack easily when it dries out.

Laying bricks

Once the concrete has been mixed, you can start laying the bricks. Plan out the dimensions of the finished product. Take into account the dimensions of the bricks and the required thickness of the mortar joints. This is how thick the mortar needs to be in between the bricks. This is the brickwork gauge work. You can watch accurate YouTube videos on how to properly apply mortar and lay bricks using easy steps and details. Be sure the steps include:

  • Spreading the mortar.
  • Creating a trench in the mortar.
  • Laying down the courses of the bricks.
  • Checking that each brick course is straight and level.
  • Checking the joints, gaps, and jointing further where necessary.
