Gravel may come in different types and applications. Get to know these elements as you choose the right gravel for your landscaping and gardening:

Rocks Come in Many Types

Stones can come in various types—they may have their own textural appeal and distinct look. The most common gravel used in landscaping are:

  • Decomposed granite – a sandy rock texture with reddish-tan colour. This type is usually used for making patios and paths.
  • Crushed stone – in comparison to decomposed granite, it has larger particles. This type can also be used for making patios, backfill, grading, and keeping wall drainage.
  • Pea gravel – this type may come in 1/8-inch to 5/8-inch regarding sizes. Its colour ranges from white to brown.

Decomposed Granite

It’s best not to put decomposed granites near your house since it can stick to your pet’s feet or your shoes. This will not only create a mess, but it may also damage hardwood floors. During the rainy season, decomposed granites are also vulnerable when it gets wet since it becomes muddy.

For pavement building applications, such as making a garden walkway, decomposed granite should be installed in layers to add durability. Because stabilised decomposed granite is less vulnerable to erosion, it offers a long life span.

Crushed Stone

The size of the crushed stone ranges from 0.5 to 1.5 inches. Its colours may come in varieties depending on where you live, but it’s usually within the shades of grey. It also discourages the growth of weeds. For gardening, it will be easier to water the plants since crushed stones allow the permeation of water.

If you’re having difficulty in preventing weeds from growing, crushed stone is an excellent ground cover since it is durable for Xeriscapes. Landscape fabrics can also be placed in between the surface of the soil and the rocks to help minimise the maintenance needed.

Pea Gravel

Pea gravel is similar to the stones you often see on the beach. Because it has a smooth finish, it is an ideal application for playgrounds, dog runs, patios, and walkways. Support the stones by adding an edging material.

There are a lot of artistic ways to make your garden look pleasing and beautiful. Why not add stones to your garden? It’s not just about making your garden look more attractive, but it also gives your plants many benefits (such as retaining the moisture of the soil).
