Rocky soil can create a lot of problems for your garden, such as making it difficult for deep-rooted plants to grow. There is no other way but to clear out these unwanted rocks in the soil since they also look ugly. Instead, you can find garden rocks for sale and decorate your garden with landscaping rocks such as river rocks and pebbles.

Essential tools to remove rocks:

  1. Rototiller or cultivator – These are motorised machines with two sets of rotating tines to dig up the soil. A cultivator is a smaller version of the tiller and is ideal for small gardens. If you don’t own either machine, you can enquire from your local landscape supply store (such as Labrador Landscape Supplies) and rent one.
  2. Scoop shovel – Depending on your gardening needs, choose from a long-handled or short-handled scoop shovel.
  3. Garden rake – Get a quality rake with metal tines. Don’t confuse this rake with a leaf rake. A garden rake has sturdy metal tines that can rake up rocks.
  4. Pick – You might need a pick to remove large rocks that you accidentally discover.
  5. Wheelbarrow or bucket – Either choice will depend on how big your garden is, and how many rocks you need to remove. Both serve the purpose of carrying a load of rocks to a designated area away from the garden.
  6. Work gloves – You need a good pair of gardening gloves to protect your hands when raking or picking up rocks.

Till the Garden Area

You need to break up the soil in the garden. This can be done with the cultivator or rototiller. Tilling the garden by hand will be too taxing and take too much time. Make sure to till and dig up to six to eight inches deep. This will loosen the soil and reveal the rocks that need to be removed.

Smooth Out the Soil

Use the rake to smoothen out the surface. When the rocks are revealed, start raking out the rocks. The rake allows you to move large amounts of rocks at a time. Rake the rocks into a pile and use the shovel to dump them into the wheelbarrow or bucket.

Smaller Rock Removal

Turn the rake upside down and drag the flat side or push the rocks out of the planting area. Place the rocks in a pile and scoop-shovel them out.
