For any landscape project, when you buy sands Australia, can magnetite or black sand be used in gardening? Sometimes called lava sand, black sand is crushed scoria, a brownish to black volcanic slag with a texture full of holes. It is actually a popular garden/landscape material as an excellent source of energy for the soil. Black soil makes soil nutrients more available to plant roots. It provides aeration and porosity to the soil and helps retain the proper amount of moisture. It is durable and mostly resists degradation.

Quality and mixture

Black sand actually has paramagnetic qualities and this helps particles in the soil align themselves to increase the fertility of the soil. It is recommended to add around 20 percent of black soil to potting soil for raised garden beds and raised pots. Because black sand creates a hard, rough surface on top of the soil, especially in garden beds, this will prevent any animals with paws (including your pets) from walking all over your gardens.

How to use black sand

Growing trees

Use under trees that are just growing or are going into full growth. For fully grown trees or sick trees, drill 2-inch holes 12 inches deep through the root zone and fill in with 50 percent black sand and 50 percent compost.

Rose beds

Add the black sand to rose bed preparations at 80 pounds per 1,000 square feet or the top of roses in pots that is heavy enough to cover the soil surface.

Other garden bed preparation

Till black soil together with organic fertiliser and compost. Use 40 pounds per 1,000 square feet.

Potting soil

Add up to 1/3 of black soil to the volume of good potting soil.

Black rocks as alternatives

If you feel overwhelmed measuring all that black soil into garden and potting soil, you can use black rocks or black lava rocks as an alternative.

Black lava rocks are made of crushed volcanic material, basically the same material as black lava sand, but in a solid and non-degradable form. They are an excellent source of energy for the soil, improves soil porosity, helps retain moisture, and lasts long. It also helps align soil particles, improves aeration, and soil texture.

You can add black rocks on top of any soil bed or garden bed as you would use mulch. As a natural deterrent against slugs, you can sprinkle a generous amount around plants.
