cypress mulch

In reality, not many people – even gardeners – are familiar with cypress mulch and how gardens can benefit from its use.

Cypress mulch is an organic material used for gardening and landscaping. Any type of organic mulch is used to retain soil moisture, keep the soil cool, and insulate plant roots during winter temperatures. Mulches even prevent the growth of weeds and give a clean and finished look to any garden or yard. Regarding these, cypress mulch offers benefits that other mulches cannot.

Shredded cypress mulch

Cypress mulch is made from pond cypress trees or bald cypress trees. Both the bark and the wood of the tree are ground up to make cypress mulch. This can be available as either cypress chips or shredded cypress mulch. The shredded form is always the better choice since shredded cypress stays in place longer and composts faster. Another benefit of shredded cypress mulch is that it is cost-effective since it is less expensive than other organic mulches and cypress chips.

More nutrients

When shredded cypress mulch decomposes, it adds nutrients to the soil. Most organic mulches don’t do this. Naturally, plants will benefit from the added nutrients. Some organic mulches also change the pH of the soil as they decompose; pine bark and pine needles add more acid to the soil, lowering the soil’s pH. Cypress mulch is neutral and doesn’t change anything in the soil as it decomposes.

Weed deterrent

Most organic mulches and compost are not effective at preventing weeds from growing. Weeds can feed off the nutrients from decomposing mulches. However, while cypress mulch decomposes, it also blocks weed growth and prevents any airborne seeds from reaching the soil to germinate. Cypress mulch also deters insects and reptiles because the mulch has sharp edges that cut into their bodies.

Nice appearance

Shredded cypress mulch is an attractive soil cover and looks much more beautiful than non-organic mulches like shredded newspaper. Cypress mulch also has a fresh and pleasant smell while it is decomposing. It eventually weathers into a soft grey colour. While other mulches tend to wash away or blow away over time, cypress mulch stays in place.
