Aside from choosing between by bulk or by the bag, what are the things to consider before buying mulches such as cypress mulch, etc.?
Mulches such as cypress mulch, pine bark mulch, hardwood mulch, etc. are used in layering over the soil to insulate and keep the temperature steady, protecting roots of plants from harsh weather. And since they keep the moisture of the soil from evaporating, it is not necessary to water them as often. Also, they shade out seeds of weeds, inhibiting them from getting enough sunlight to sprout.
We’ve known the use of mulches, so what, then, should we consider when we decide to shop for mulch?
Sources
Most of the organic mulches that are produced commercially are wood byproducts from the lumber industry. Compared to cheap bags of mulch that can be bought in different venues, bulk mulches from landscape supply companies or bagged mulches from home-improvement stores or garden centres are likely to be safer and cleaner for use. It is advisable not to purchase bags of mulches being sold at lower prices as they are found to contain toxic waste chemicals, lead paint, or metal, and shredded construction debris.
Purpose
In choosing which type of mulch to get, consider its purpose, whether it’s used around trees or plants. Shredded hardwood, which is a medium-textured mulch, works in most places, while big chunks, such as pine bark nuggets, last longer around trees. Straw, which is fluffy and easily decomposes, is a great option for vegetable beds. Layering a landscape fabric underneath the mulch will help deter weeds.
Bulk vs Bag
Buying a bulk mulch, which can be ordered from landscape supply companies and garden centres, is more affordable than mulches available in bags. However, the latter is easier to handle. Know that it is best to shop around before finally deciding which works better for your gardening or landscaping endeavours.
Plan
Figure out how much mulch you need to use for your garden. This way, you are aware that you won’t be wasting your money just because you bought too much.
